IRENAEUS RULE OR RANKING OF THE FAITH
(1.)
“...FIRST ( ARTICLE ) OF FAITH...”
LATIN TEXT: “...Et haec est dispositio ordinis[d] ( fidei ) nostrae et ( fundamentum )[e] aedificii et confirmatio conversationis. Deus Pater in-crreatus, in-dependens [seu im-mensus][f], in-visibilis, ( unus ) Deus. Creator universi. Hoc (longe) - ( primum caput[g] fidei nostrae )...” - (Page 41/42; Chapter 6; DEMONSTRATIO APOSTOLICAE PRAEDICATIONIS LATINE REDDITA. Simon Weber 1917.)
[FOOTNOTE ( PAGE 41 ) 1]: Compare Ephesians 4:6.
[FOOTNOTE 2]: Compare Galations 4:6.
[FOOTNOTE D]: TM: Kanon.
[FOOTNOTE E]: TM: Grund
[FOOTNOTE F]: Arm: antar; vide supra p. 29 n. h.
(IRENAEUS): “...And this is the ( rule ) of our faith, the foundation of our building and the security of our walk, even GOD THE FATHER, In-generate, Un-containable, In-visible, ONE GOD THE CREATOR OF ALL. ( This is – the – foremost – article of our faith )....” - (Page 114/115, Dem. Of Apost. Preach. C. vi, Chapter VIII, “The Doctrine of the Trinity,” IRENAEUS OF LUGDUNUM – A STUDY OF HIS TEACHING By F. R. Montgomery Hitchcock 1914.)
(IRENAEUS): “...This then is the ( order ) of the rule of our faith, and the foundation of the building, and the stability of our conversation: GOD, THE FATHER, not made, not material, invisible; ONE GOD, THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS: this is the ( first – point )[21] of our faith...” - (Page 74/75; Irenaeus, THE DEMONSTRATION OF THE APOSTOLIC PREACHING Translated by J. Armitage Robinson. 1920.)
[FOOTNOTE 21]: Lit. "head:" cf. cc. 7, 100.
(IRENAEUS): “...And this is the ( drawing-up ) of our faith, the foundation of the building, and consolidation of a way of life[38]. GOD, THE FATHER, un-created, beyond grasp, invisible, ( ONE ) GOD THE MAKER OF ALL ; ( this is the first and formost article of our faith )[39]...” - (Page 51; Chapter 6; ST. IRENAEUS PROOF OF THE APOSTOLIC PREACHING Translated and Annotated by Joseph P. Smith 1952.)
[FOOTNOTE 38]: “drawing-up”: das kargi, a doublet; either word alone would correspond to Greek ( τάξις ) [ RANK ] … Here, however, Irenaeus seems to be using the word simply in the sense “drawing-up in order” of faith (cf. Following metaphors)...”
[FOOTNOTE 39]: “article” here and for all other occurences in the Proof is my rendering of 'glux' ([Gk., text kephaln, kephalaiov] head[ing]”) in this sense.
I would just like to draw attention to the ( doctrinal - significance ) of this single footnote:
[FOOTNOTE 38]: “drawing-up”: das kargi, a doublet; either word alone would correspond to Greek ( τάξις ) [ RANK ] … Here, however, Irenaeus seems to be using the word simply in the sense “drawing-up in order” of faith (cf. Following metaphors)...”
Notice how the translator plays down the idea of “RANK” - which is the real meaning of Gk., ( τάξις ).
The remarks “...Here, however, Irenaeus seems to be using the word simply in the sense “drawing-up in order” of faith (cf. Following metaphors)...”
This is only the ( opinion ) of the Tri{3}nitarian translator. He must say it is different from “RANK” because it would show his dogma of supposed equality in the Tri{3}ad of Christendom was wrong!
So he has to explain it away!
Irenaeus wrote in Greek originally so his meaning no doubt would be that of “RANK” and not just “order”.
There is no ( descending or ascending ) RANK among “equals” as the ( theory ) goes.
Follow my drift!
(IRENAEUS): “...And this is the ( order – of ) our faith and the ( foundation ) of the building and the support of our conduct : GOD, THE FATHER, un-created, in-comprehensible, in-visible, ( ONE ) GOD. CREATOR OF ALL. This the ( first – heading ) of our faith...” - (Page 18; Chapter 6; ST. IRENAEUS - [Εἰς ἐπίδειξιν τοῦ ἀποστολικοῦ κηρύγματος ] THE PROOF OF APOSTOLIC PREACHING WITH SEVEN FRAGMENTS ARMENIAN VERSION EDITED AND TRANSLATED BY HIS LORDSHIP THE BISHOP KARAPET TER MEKERTTSCHIAN AND THE REV. (2.)
“...SECOND ( ARTICLE ) OF FAITH...”
- (Page 41/42; Chapter 6; DEMONSTRATIO APOSTOLICAE PRAEDICATIONIS LATINE REDDITA. Simon Weber 1917.)
[FOOTNOTE D]: TM: Kanon.
[FOOTNOTE E]: TM: Grund
[FOOTNOTE F]: Arm: antar; vide supra p. 29 n. h.
[FOOTNOTE G]: Arm: gluch. TM: Punkt.
[FOOTNOTE H]: TM: Tragweite.
[FOOTNOTE I]: Pronomen relativum hic non ad praecedentem vocem Patris, sed ad Ch. I. Dominum nostrum referendum esse videtur.
[FOOTNOTE ( PAGE 42 ) 1]: Compare 2nd Tim 1:10.
[FOOTNOTE A]: Sive consummandum. TM: und zusammenzufassen.
(IRENAEUS): “...The ( second ) is the Word ( of ) God, the Son ( of ) God, Christ Jesus our Lord, Who appeared to the prophets, [Compare Acts 7 “Angel”] and in accordance with the form of their prophesying, and ( according – to – the course of decrees of THE FATHER ) --- ( through ) whom everything came into existence, who at the end of times appeared in visible and palpable manner[*] to bring all things to ( perfection ), and sum up all things in himself. A Man among men He became in order to destroy death, to make manifest the life, and to bring about a fellowship of union between God and man....” - (Page 114/115, Dem. Of Apost. Preach. C. vi, Chapter VIII, “The Doctrine of the Trinity,” IRENAEUS OF LUGDUNUM – A STUDY OF HIS TEACHING By F. R. Montgomery Hitchcock 1914.)
(IRENAEUS): “...The ( second - point ) is: The Word of God, Son of God, Christ Jesus our Lord, who was manifested to the prophets according to the form of their prophesying and according to the method of the dispensation of the Father:[22] through whom all things were made; who also at the end of the times, to complete and gather up[23] all things, was made man among men, visible and tangible,[24] in order to abolish death and show forth life and produce a community of union between God and man....” - (Page 74/75; Irenaeus, THE DEMONSTRATION OF THE APOSTOLIC PREACHING Translated by J. Armitage Robinson. 1920.)
[FOOTNOTE 22]: This is fully worked out in IV, lv. 1-6: the prophets were "members of Christ," and so each, according to the "member" that he was, declared his portion of prophecy, all together announcing the whole.
[FOOTNOTE 23]: The same double rendering of a0nakefalaiw&sasqai (Eph. i. 10) is found in the Arm. version of V, i. 2.
[FOOTNOTE 24]: IV, xi. 4: "visibilem et palpabilem;" cf. IV, xiii. 1, where the Arm. shows that the Latin "passibilis" should be corrected to "palpabilis."
(IRENAEUS): “...But the ( second – article ) is the Word of God, the Son of God, Christ Jesus our Lord, who was shown forth by the prophets according to the design of their prophecy and according to the manner in which the Father diposed; and ( through ) Him were made all things whatsoever.[40] He also, in the end of times,[41] for the recapitulation of all things, is ( become ) a man among men, visible and tangible, in order to abolish death and to bring to light life, and bring about the communion of God and man.[42]...” - (Page 51; Chapter 6; ST. IRENAEUS PROOF OF THE APOSTOLIC PREACHING Translated and Annotated by Joseph P. Smith 1952.)
[FOOTNOTE 40]: “...and through Him...”: literally “...( of ) the Father, ( through ) whom...” ; the relative surely refers back to the Word.
[FOOTNOTE 41]: “...in the end of times...” Dan 11:13.
[FOOTNOTE 42]: “...for the recapitulation of all things...” in the text: “...to recapitulate all things...” the verb being rendered by a doublet, (glxaworel ew bovandakel) “...sum up and contain...”
(IRENAEUS): “...But the ( second – heading ) is the Word of God, God the Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Who was revealed to the prophets, after the manner of their prophecy and as much as had entered into the ( pre-ordination of the Father ). By the Son's hand all things have come into being. And at the end of time, to gather all together and sum up all things, He willed to become man among men, visible and palpable, so as to destroy death and show forth life and perfect reconcililation between God and man...” - (Page 18; Chapter 6; ST.
